Explore the past of a riverside township with glimpses of pioneer
living, Great Lakes shipping, the Victorian era and more. With eleven
exhibit buildings, we are "A museum ... and so much more ... for
you to explore!"
What We Offer:
- Main Building - Explore a variety of exhibits, 1930's storefronts,
country
- store and 10,000-year-old mastodon bones. Discover life on
the lakes in our marine room.
- Trinity St. Clair Chapel - Built in 1919, the former Trinity
Anglican Church, Mooretown highlights the importance of the churches
in the development of our community. This building is also available
to rent as a charming location for weddings.
- One-Room Schoolhouse - Visit the 1920's in our one-room
schoolhouse. Children will discover what rural school life was like
at this time, while adults reminisce about their own "reading,
'riting and 'rithmetic" days.
- Log Cabin - When you step into the Courtney log cabin, you step
into the home of a settler in the late 1800's. The handmade quilts,
kettle for dipping candles and the garden outside are all evidence
of the settlers' self-sufficiency.
- Railroad Station - Imagine the sound of a distant train as you
explore the freight room and waiting area of the original Mooretown
station built in 1886.
- Reilley Cottage - Enjoy the pleasant breezes from the river on the
porch, then step inside to experience the charming atmosphere of our
Victorian cottage.
- Blacksmith Shop - The heat of the forge, the glow of red-hot metal
and the clanging of the hammer -- a blacksmith's skills were
essential to every early community. This part of history is
preserved in our functional blacksmith shop.
- Basswood Block - Visit part of an early main street in this
building which houses a carpentry shop, print shop and
harness-making shop.
- Range Light - Admire the 42-foot wooden rear-range light, built in
1890. This light guided ships up the St. Clair River for 92 years.
- Francis E. Shaw Exhibition Hall - Explore Moore Township's
agricultural roots as you browse through an intriguing collection of
farm antiques. A late-1800's "dead wagon", functional
machine shop and series of shopfronts are also highlights.
- Caboose - The caboose, furnished and equipped, appears ready for
the brakeman and conductor to arrive for the train's next departure.
- Fire Hall - Step inside our replica fire hall to see the 1925
LaFrance fire truck. View equipment from the buckets for the bucket
brigade to late 20th century bunker gear.
